Labuschagne hoping India's tour down under wouldn't be affected by COVID-19 pandemic

The deadly outbreak threatens to ruin India's entire trip to Australia at this stage.

It would feel "pretty devastating" if India's much-anticipated tour down under doesn't happen because of the COVID-19 pandemic, said Australia's rising star Marnus Labuschagne.

The Indian team is scheduled to travel to Australia for a full series, beginning in October and concluding in the middle of January, with the T20 World Cup and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy being the two marquee events.

However, with the deadly outbreak posing an unprecedented health crisis and forcing the Australian government to impose a six-month lockdown, a dark cloud of uncertainty hovers around the entire tour.

"Well, it would mean that we are not playing cricket which is pretty devastating for myself, the rest of the team and for the country," Labuschagne told reporters during an online press conference.

"In between, there is the T20 World Cup, scheduled for an October 18 start, but the mega event’s future is also shrouded in uncertainty due to the global crisis."

The travelling ban can be revoked, of course, especially with Australia's healthcare system doing a wonderful job to try and bring the normalcy back. The country has recorded just over 6,800 positive cases so far, including less than 100 deaths.

"Australia has done very well with the quarantine and isolation, so we’ve been able to get our number down relatively quickly. With a limited amount of deaths and our healthcare system has been so good during this time," said Labuschagne.

"Hopefully because of all that good work we can actually get India over here in 3-4 months or 4-5 months."

"Everything is changing so quickly so it’s really hard to put my finger on how everything’s going to pan out. Hopefully, it does pan out well but if it doesn’t it will be very disappointing," added the young right-hand batsman, who had a terrific last season in Test match cricket.
