Indian U19 women's team won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa.
Titas Sadhu (2/6) and spinners Archana Devi (2/17) and Parshavi Chopra (2/13) kept England to 68 runs after Shafali Verma won the toss and chose to bowl first. Then despite some hiccups, Soumya Tiwari (24*) and G Trisha (24) ensured that the Indian team crossed the finish line with 7 wickets in hand.
The Shafali Verma-led side created history by becoming the first Asian women’s team to win an ICC event and the first Indian women’s team to do so as well.
Indian men’s and women’s senior cricket teams were seen celebrating this historic feat as India coach Rahul Dravid and India’s U19 2018 World Cup winning captain Prithvi Shaw sent wishes for the U19 winning team.
In a video shared by the BCCI, Team India coach Rahul Dravid said,” Today was the landmark day for India under-19 Women’s cricket team and they had a fantastic day. I would like to pass it on winning Under-19 Boys captain to pass on a message to young girls.”
Prithvi Shaw said: “I think, it’s a great achievement. Everyone wants to congratulate the under-19 Women’s team. So Congratulations!”
On the other hand, India Women’s senior team, who are in South Africa as well for the T20 World Cup 2023, were shown shouting and dancing after the under-19 team’s historic win. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and other players can be seen watching and cheering every moment.
