Afghanistan will host India for three T20Is in Delhi.
The same report also stated that spin all-rounder Washington Sundar and pacer Jasprit Bumrah are also on track to be 100% fit.
Times of India reported that both Pandya and Reddy are training intensely at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and operating at full capacity as they prepare to return to international cricket. Pandya last played competitive cricket in the IPL 2026 and was troubled by back spasms and hamstring issues.
Reddy, on the other hand, suffered a quad injury and missed the Ireland and England tour and the Sri Lanka tour. Washington Sundar will return to the CoE this week to demonstrate his fitness before selection, following a weekend in Chennai.
To choose the team for the three T20Is, the men's senior selection committee, under Ajit Agarkar, is expected to convene this week.
"The practical target is the T20Is against Afghanistan, and this will allow Washington Sundar to ease back into the setup with the shortest format. His workload has gradually increased in the last few weeks, and he could be available for selection for the three T20Is.
Both Reddy and Pandya have been at the CoE for a very long time now and only take breaks for personal commitments. Reddy only goes back home during the weekends, while Pandya has anyway moved his base to Bengaluru," a source told Times of India.
Meanwhile, an update was also given on Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the Sri Lanka Test series. The Indian team management wants to handle the fragile Bumrah, given his importance for the two Tests in New Zealand.
"Bumrah is progressing well. In the buildup to the 2027 World Cup, the plan was that he would focus on ODIs and Tests, but since the knee injury, the management wants to ease him back with the shortest format first. He is being closely monitored, and while the Afghanistan T20Is could be too close for comfort, the Asian Games seem highly likely, provided there are no late surprises," the source added.
The management of the Indian squad is looking into left-arm spinner possibilities in the shortest format following the team's previous performances in England and Ireland.
With two wickets in four Twenty20 Internationals against England and two wickets in two Twenty20 Internationals against Ireland, Axar Patel's performance in all seven games was average.
Krunal Pandya’s name is now being discussed, and he might return to the India T20I squad for the first time since 2021. His impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their two IPL wins have also played a huge role in BCCI selectors noticing him once again.
Now it remains to be seen whether the selectors revert to a proven performer as they look to find the right candidate for the crucial left-arm spinner spot.
