IPL: 7 players with Most Man of the Match Awards in IPL

Here are the seven players with most MoM awards in history of IPL so far.

Winning the Man of the Match in any format is a big achievement for any player. It shows that you really contributed significantly to the cause of your team mostly in victories. However, sometimes the award is also given to players who tried their best even in losing causes.

T20 format is something where a player gets just a very short time to impress the adjudicators of the award. But there have been many such players in the Indian Premier League who have time and again proved that they are the best when it comes to winning matches for their respective teams.

Given the level of the encounters in the world’s most popular league in the world; there have been some players who have shined a lot and went on to win multiple Man of the Match awards. And today, Team COC takes a look at the top seven players with most Man of the Match awards in the IPL history.

15 - SHANE WATSON (RR, RCB, CSK)
3575 runs in 134 matches, 4 centuries, strike rate of 139.53, best of 117*

Shane Watson was the first-ever Most Valuable Player award winner in the IPL when his team Rajasthan Royals won the title in 2008. Watson continued to have brilliant outings in the IPL throughout his career and has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings as well.

In his overall career so far in the IPL, Watson has won 15 Man of the Match awards. He also won the Most Valuable Player award for the second time in 2013, a record he shares with Andre Russell.

 

16 - YUSUF PATHAN (RR, KKR, SRH)
3204 runs in 174 matches, strike rate of 142.97, 42 wickets, best of 100

Yusuf Pathan was the breakout star from the first three seasons of the IPL. Playing for the Rajasthan Royals, Pathan went on to win the IPL in 2008 with them. He was then bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011 and it is with this team, he developed into a lethal lower-order hitter.

Pathan won the IPL in 2012 and 2014 with KKR and made 3204 runs in 174 matches in total in the tournament. He scored one century, which is still remembered as one of the best in the IPL and also picked 42 wickets with his part-time off-spin. Yusuf Pathan was named the Man of the Match 16 times in the IPL.

 

17 - ROHIT SHARMA (DC, MI)
4898 runs in 188 matches, best of 109*, five-time IPL winner

Rohit Sharma was picked by the Deccan Chargers in the 2008 IPL and he won his first title with them in 2009. After the team folded, Mumbai Indians grabbed him in 2011 and this resulted in a run that has made him the most successful player in IPL in terms of title wins.

He has now lifted the IPL trophy five times, with four of those coming with MI in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, all of them as captain of the franchise. He has also excelled as a batsman with 4898 runs in 188 matches and one century. He has won 17 Man of the Match awards.

 

17 - MS DHONI (CSK, RPS)
4432 runs in 190 matches, strike rate of 137.85, 209 sixes, three-time IPL winner

One of the most loved and respected players in the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings’ loyalist MS Dhoni has won the Man of the Match award 17 times in the tournament. He is also a three-time IPL winner and only captain to successfully defend his title, winning in 2010,2011 and 2018.

Dhoni has been instrumental in making the IPL popular thanks to his team CSK qualifying in the playoffs in every season they have played in. They are the team to make most finals and hence are regarded as one of the top two teams in the T20 format, with MI being the other, from India.

Dhoni himself has amassed 4432 runs in 190 matches with 209 sixes to his name at a strike rate of 137.85.

 

17 - DAVID WARNER (DC, SRH)
4706 runs in 126 matches, 4 centuries, best of 126, strike rate of 142.39

David Warner is the only foreigner in the top five run-getters in all IPL, with 4706 runs in 126 matches to his name with four centuries. He is also the only player to win the Orange Cap thrice in the tournament- 2015, 2017 and 2019. He has a total of 17 Man of the Match awards to his name.

Warner led the Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL title in 2016, defeating RCB in the final and has been one of the best batsmen to play in the league. Warner has hit 458 fours and 181 sixes in his IPL career and averages an impressive 43.18, for someone who opens the innings.

 

20 - AB DE VILLIERS (DC, RCB)
4395 runs in 154 matches, strike rate of 151.23, 3 centuries, 212 sixes

South African talisman AB de Villiers has been one of the main attractions of the Indian Premier League since its inception. He previously played for Delhi Daredevils, before moving onto Royal Challengers Bangalore, where he has seen his popularity grow to dizzying heights.

AB de Villiers has won the Man of the Match award 20 times in his 154-match IPL career. He has 4395 runs at a strike rate of 151.23 with 3 centuries and 212 sixes to his name. He has 93 catches and 7 stumpings to his name as well, making him one of the most valuable players of all-time in the league’s history.

 

21 - CHRIS GAYLE (KKR, RCB, KXIP)
4484 runs in 125 matches, strike rate of 151.02, 6 centuries, best of 175*, 326 sixes

Chris Gayle redefined T20 cricket with his power-hitting and was the first batsman to hit a century in T20s. He transformed his game to the 20-over format and brought that success to the IPL as well, where he has 4484 runs in 125 matches at an astonishing strike rate of 151.02. He also has hit the most sixes in the IPL- 326 and owns the highest score in all T20- 175*.

Gayle has hit 6 centuries in the tournament, the most and has won the Man of the Match award a record 21 times for his batting heroics. It is a shame that he is yet to win an IPL trophy, but he does bring the much-needed attention and attraction whenever he walks out to bat. He was the first to win the Orange Cap back-to-back in 2011-2012 and was the first to breach the 700-run mark barrier in a single edition of the tournament.

A true superstar nonetheless for ages.
