Bangladesh was bowled out for 146 runs in their second innings, setting India a target of 95 runs.
Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal was all praises for India captain Rohit Sharma, not only for the way he batted in India's first innings but also for the overall aggressive mentality he and the team showed.
After losing two days to rain, India bowled out Bangladesh for 233 on day four and then went hammer and tongs in their first innings. Rohit Sharma led the charge with two sixes on the first two balls he faced. He made 23 in 11 balls, while Yashasvi Jaiswal made 72 runs in 51 balls as India added 55 runs in 4 overs for the first wicket.
The rest of the batters followed the captain’s charge with Shubman Gill (39), Virat Kohli (47 in 35), and KL Rahul (68 in 43 balls) helping India put up 285/9d with a lead of 52 runs. Bangladesh managed 26/2 at the end of day 4.
In a stunning display of power hitting, India broke the Test cricket record for the fastest 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 runs. Tamim praised the approach, stating that this type of play was only possible with full support from the coach and captain.
"When Bangladesh plays against Zimbabwe there's a lot to lose for Bangladesh, not much to gain. A lot of pressure is on Bangladesh. It's similar to India when India is playing Bangladesh. There's a lot to lose for India, but not much to gain. So in this kind of situation, the bigger teams normally take the safer way which India could have taken yesterday.
Just bat normally 90 overs and see what happens, then give Bangladesh 30-40 overs and see if they can get out. But that is the difference between the mentality of a champion team and a team that has not been very successful in international cricket. India took the attacking way and it was backed heavily by the management and the captain," Tamim Iqbal said on Jio Cinema ahead of Day 5 of the Test match.
Tamim stated that Rohit Sharma was able to persuade the Indian squad that personal accomplishments were irrelevant and that the team needed to play in a specific manner. The former Bangladesh captain stated that Sharma was setting an example for the team by hitting the opening ball for six.
"You saw the way Rohit came in yesterday, first ball six, maybe the first three shots was almost all sixes, so that shows the mentality and that is the way he wants to lead and that is the way he wants all the other players to perform. So it's a great example.
I think whatever he is doing, I'm not in that dressing room, I don't know much, but from the outside, whatever he is doing is working for them. Personal milestones and personal achievements are not as important, as they used to be before. It's all about the team, whether you get 20 or whether you get 200. If the team needs you, you have to do it, and that is the beauty," Tamim concluded.
India managed to bowl out Bangladesh for 146 runs at lunch and will need to chase 95 runs to win the Test and the series 2-0.
