Umesh claimed three wickets on Day 2 as India bundled out Australia for 197.
India’s first innings folded for a paltry 109 as Australia’s spin troika of Matthew Kuhnemann (5-16), Nathan Lyon (3-35) and Todd Murphy (1-23) wreaked havoc with the ball.
On the same pitch, the tourists managed to reach 156/4 at stumps and go into Day 2 with a valuable 47-run lead.
However, Indian bowlers made a remarkable comeback on the second day to limit Australia’s lead to 88 runs. Pacer Umesh Yadav and off-spinner R Ashwin were the wrecker-in-chief with the ball, claiming three wickets each to bundle out Australia for 197.
Peter Handscomb and Cameron Green were the unbeaten batters for Australia at the close of play on Day 1. While Ashwin dismissed Handscomb for 19, Umesh trapped Green in front of the wicket for 21.
The duo then demolished Australia’s lower order as the likes of Alex Carey (3), Mitchell Starc (1), Nathan Lyon (5) and Todd Murphy (0) got out cheaply. While Umesh cleaned up Starc and Murphy, Ashwin got rid of Carey and Lyon.
Cricket experts on Twitter lauded Umesh Yadav, who played this match as the hosts decided to rest Mohammad Shami, for scripting India’s comeback in the second Test with a fiery spell on a pitch assisting the spinners.
