Rohit Sharma notched up his century in the post-lunch session on Day 2.
The Indian captain was unbeaten on 56 at the close of play on Day 1 and he continued his brilliance on the second day as well.
On a track where Australia’s innings folded for a paltry 177 and no visiting batter managed to hit a half-century, Rohit produced a batting masterclass against the spinners. While the right-handed opener started aggressively on the opening day, he stayed patient to see off some tough spells on Day 2.
Even though the hosts kept losing wickets at regular intervals, Rohit held the one end firmly and notched up his ninth Test century in the post-lunch session. The Indian skipper reached the landmark with a boundary off Todd Murphy in the 63rd over.
Thanks to his classy century, India erased the deficit and took a first-innings lead. At the end of the 65th over, the home team was on 189/5, leading Australia by 12 runs with Rohit (103*) and Ravindra Jadeja (12*) unbeaten in the middle.
