Meg Lanning, captain of Delhi Capitals Women (DC), claimed that luck has not been on her side after her club suffered their third consecutive defeat in the Women's Premier League (WPL) final, losing to Mumbai Indians in another close affair.
This was their second WPL final loss against the Mumbai Indians, despite being in a strong position during the title match.
The Delhi team had a realistic aim of 150 runs, but they struggled to form important partnerships. Their skipper, Meg Lanning, complimented the team's efforts but expressed disappointment.
"We have had another good season, and unfortunately, we couldn't get over the line. Congrats to Mumbai--you have been excellent through the season. Chasing 150 was a pretty good target for us. One more partnership could have been enough, but proud of the team,” Lanning said at the post-final presentation ceremony.
"There's no right or wrong way to do it, performing on the night is important, and Mumbai was too good tonight. We haven't been able to put our best performance in the final on the board, which is disappointing, but that's cricket. It has just not happened for us. We are bitterly disappointed. We put ourselves in a good position but couldn't finish it off," Lanning added.
The summit clash was played at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium, with DC's Meg Lanning winning the toss and opting to chase.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the MI captain, led from the front with 66 off 44 balls, including nine fours and two sixes. Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 30 runs as Mumbai reached 149/7 in 20 overs. Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and Shree Charani each grabbed two wickets for Delhi.
Except for Marizanne Kapp's 40, Jemimah Rodrigues' 30 runs, and Niki Prasad's 25*, Delhi batters were unable to sustain the pressure applied by the Mumbai bowlers in the chase. Nat Sciver-Brunt got 3/30 and Amelia Kerr claimed two wickets as DC managed only 141/9 and lost by eight runs.
Harmanpreet Kaur won the Player of the Match and Nat Sciver-Brunt was the Player of the Tournament.
