Mumbai Indians women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur found herself in a hot soup after a furious standoff with UP Warriorz’ Sophie Ecclestone in their recent WPL 2025 match.
The incident occurred at the end of the 19th over when umpire Ajitesh Argal warned Harmanpreet that due to a slow over rate, her team would be limited to only three fielders outside the circle in the last over.
The judgment irritated the MI captain, prompting a brief disagreement with the umpire. Kiwi all-rounder Amelia Kerr, evidently outraged by the decision, joined the conversation to back her skipper.
As the conversation heated up, Ecclestone, who was at the non-striker's end, approached Argal to share her thoughts. Her involvement irritated Harmanpreet, who responded with her own comments.
The situation quickly escalated before the umpires intervened, ensuring the spat did not spiral out of control.
Here is the video:
Harmanpreet was finally reprimanded and fined 10% of her match fee for violating the WPL Code of Conduct. She admitted to a Level 1 infraction under Article 2.8, which includes expressing dissatisfaction with an umpire's judgment during a match.
The spat didn’t matter much as the MI women defeated UP Warriorz by 6 wickets. Asked to bat first UPW posted 150/9 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Georgia Voll made 55, while Grace Harris (28) and Deepti Sharma (27) supported her. Amelia Kerr took 5/38 in her 4 overs.
In reply, Hayley Matthews scored 68, while Nat Sciver-Brunt scored 37 runs as MI Women won the match with 9 balls to spare.
