The Women’s Premier League (WPL) has taken the cricketing world by storm in its inaugural edition. Just like the IPL, top women players from around the globe were up for grabs at the auction last month and then the tournament produced high-voltage matches to entertain the fans.
On Friday (March 24), Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra attended the WPL 2023 eliminator between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
In a video uploaded by WPL’s official Twitter account, Chopra shared his experience of meeting the women’s cricket team, his favourite players and a lot more.
Earlier this year, the Javelin thrower had interacted with the Indian squad on the eve of their U19 T20 Women’s World Cup final against England.
“I felt great. It was the first time I met the Indian Women’s Cricket Team and it felt great to watch India win the World Cup in South Africa,” Neeraj Chopra said in the video.
“Today, I’ve come again to meet them and it feels so good to see the environment of the tournament, people supporting women’s cricket, the kind of matches being played and the competition…it’s so good to witness,” he added.
Sharing his thoughts on WPL, Chopra said, “In the Olympics, both men and women compete but it feels so good to see women’s cricket get recognition and support from people.”
When asked to pick three favourite players from the league, Neeraj Chopra took the names of MI captain Harmanpreet Kaur, RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana and Delhi Capitals’ dashing opener Shafali Verma.
The 25-year-old also urged the fans to support the players in tough times. “We cannot always perform well and that is when we need support from people the most.”
“The athletes themselves go through hard times. Keep supporting them. Such things happen in sports,” he remarked.
