The third day of the second Test match between West Indies and India has been a battle of attrition with the hosts' batting line-up rising to the challenge of defying the visitors' excellent spinners.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite led from the front with the bat as his team showed much better fight on a slow pitch after India piled up 438 in their first innings courtesy Virat Kohli's 121 and fifties by Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Brathwaite, resuming day three on 37* with his team at 86/1, went on to score 75 before he was cleaned up by Ashwin, having displayed amazing patience to face 235 deliveries.

Jermaine Blackwood also continued in the same vein as his captain but was dismissed for 20 off 92 balls in the first over after the tea break to a stunning catch by Ajinkya Rahane off Jadeja.

Rahane, the recently appointed Test vice-captain is rated highly among the best slip fielders produced by India, as he took his 102nd catch with his left hand and gave India a boost at the start of a new session.
