The first Test between West Indies and India got underway at Windsor Park in Roseau, Dominica, and saw the home side captain Kraigg Brathwaite win the toss and choose to bat first.
Both the teams had new faces debuting as West Indies gave local batter Alick Athanaze his debut and on the other hand, India gave debut caps to Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan.
In the first session of the play, before lunch, India dominated with the ball, as the hosts lost 4 wickets for a total of 68 runs by the time break was taken. R Ashwin was the first to break through as he dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 12 runs.
In doing so he also became only the fifth bowler to dismiss both father and son in Test cricket, as he had dismissed Tagenarine’s father Shivnarine Chanderpaul a decade back.
Then soon after he accounted for the West Indies skipper who went for a rash shot and gave an easy catch to his Indian counterpart, also off Ashwin.
Shardul Thakur then struck, removing Raymon Reifer for 2 and then Ravindra Jadeja hit a telling blow as he dismissed vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood for 14 runs. However, the credit for the wicket went to Mohammed Siraj who completed an amazing catch.
Blackwood tried to hoick Jadeja straight over his head but only managed to slice the ball, which was going straight. But the pacer, who was at mid-off, sprinted a few paces back and dived full length in the air to complete a brilliant catch.
