Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has said that Shubman Gill needs to start converting his good starts into big scores. The young batter scored 64 in the first ODI against West Indies, his maiden half-century in the 50-over format.

India won the second match of the ongoing three-match ODI series against the West Indies on Sunday (July 24). Gill and Shreyas Iyer also had significant roles to play, even though Akshar Patel's heroics with the bat sealed the game and the series.

Gill gave the team a solid start on Sunday with skipper Shikhar Dhawan (13 off 31 balls) struggling to score at the other end.

He looked solid in his innings of 43 off 49 balls before he got out. Salman Butt stated that the youngster has been repeatedly throwing his wicket away after getting set.

"Shubman Gill played well, but once again threw his wicket after being set. He's been doing that repeatedly now. While he does play very well, I think he needs to carry on and score big because he has a lot of talent," said Butt on his Youtube channel.

The former cricketer also applauded India for having such a strong bench. Without its main talents, including skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah among others, the Men in Blue managed to win the series.

“India have a solid bench strength. They are in a developmental phase and a lot their pool of players is continuously increasing. We can't see much difference in the team even when several big names are absent,” he stated.

"This is because the management is providing consistent opportunities and the players have been responding well. The communication has become very clear." he added.

The third ODI will be played in Trinidad on Wednesday (July 27).
