Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has taken up the responsibility of vice-captaincy well and has played two brilliant knocks in the first two ODIs against West Indies in Trinidad.

Batting at No.3, Iyer is currently the leading run-scorer for India and has smashed 117 runs in the two games he has played so far. The right-hander, after playing a knock of 54 runs in the first ODI, continued his fine form in the second game.

After India lost skipper Dhawan (13) and Shubman Gill (43) early while chasing 312 runs, Iyer stood tall for his side and held the one end while wickets kept tumbling at the other. He scored 63 runs in 71 balls and stitched 99 runs partnership with Sanju Samson (54) and bailed his team out of trouble after early wickets.

Although he failed to take his side home, his knock surely was crucial in the context of the game and provided the platform for the lower order to take bowlers to the cleaners and win the match.

After the match, Iyer talked about his knock in the post-match press conference, but he had trouble expressing his words. He started off by saying “Yes obviously, Whatever hard work there is, is off the field. These (knocks) are only a replica of it."

Soon he realised that ‘replica’ was not the right word. Although he could not find an accurate word for that, he continued saying, "Whatever you see here on the field is a result of what you do off the field."
