WI v IND 2022: Team India fined 20% match fees for slow over-rate in 1st ODI

India won the 1st ODI by 3 runs | GettyTeam India copped a fine from the ICC for slow over-rate offense in their 3-run win over the West Indies in the first ODI of the three-match series in Trinidad on July 22, 2022.

Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after India was ruled to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offenses, players are fined 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time.

There was no requirement for a formal hearing as India captain Shikhar Dhawan pleaded guilty to the offense and accepted the fine.

On-field umpires Joel Wilson and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth umpire Nigel Duguid leveled the charge.

India won the first ODI by 3 runs thanks to a superlative bowling performance from Mohammed Siraj as he bowled brilliantly to defend 12 runs in the last over as West Indies tried to chase down a 309-run target. For the home team, the chase was powered by half-centuries from Kyle Mayers and Brandon King.

For India Shikhar Dhawan was named the Player of the Match for his 97, while Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer also hit half-centuries.
