The first ODI between India and West Indies in Trinidad went down to the wire, with the visitors eventually prevailing by three runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Chasing 309, the hosts were on course to a sensational victory after opener Kyle Mayers (75) and middle-order Brandon King (54) provided a perfect platform with brilliant half-centuries.
In the death overs, Akeal Hosein (32*) and Romario Shepherd (39*) almost took West Indies over the finishing line but Indian bowlers held their nerves to seal a thrilling win.
Defending 15 runs in the final over, Mohammed Siraj started off with a dot and a leg bye but his third ball went for a boundary. The pacer wasn’t at fault as he bowled a stunning yorker but Shepherd got an inside edge and the ball raced to the fence.
Halfway into the over, the match was still hanging in balance and tension was rising in both the dressing rooms. The excitement also got the better of India head coach Rahul Dravid, who is known for his calm demeanour.
In a video shared by the BCCI on Twitter, Dravid was seen having an animated discussion with batting coach Vikram Rathour. The clip also captured Ishan Kishan cheering for Siraj while the West Indies camp also looked upbeat.
In the end, Siraj held his nerves and defended 10 runs in the last three balls to seal the deal for India. He was the stand-out bowler for India, returning with the figures of 2/57 in his 10 overs.
Earlier, the tourists rode on half-centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (97 off 99 balls), Shubman Gill (64 off 53 balls), and Shreyas Iyer (54 off 57 balls) to post 308/7 on the board.
