Former India batter-turned-commentator Rohan Gavaskar said that people should not question opener Shikhar Dhawan's form or his place in the Indian team after a couple of bad games, as it is totally unfair for a player who has been doing well for a long time.
Dhawan’s managed 31*, 9, and 1 in the recently concluded ODI series against England, and his performance raised questions about the stability of his place in the Indian team. No longer in the plans for the Test and T20I side, ODI is the only format Shikhar Dhawan plays.
However, Gavaskar said that it is completely unfair to question his place when he was asked whether the West Indies tour is his final shot to keep his place in India’s ODI set-up.
Speaking to Sports18, Rohan Gavaskar said: “Not make-or-break, he is an exceptional performer in international cricket and he has been so for a while. He has had three bad games in England and we are talking about it as make or break or is he on last chance, which I think is a little harsh, it is a little unfair.”
Rohan, son of legendary Sunil Gavaskar, also said that Dhawan's poor form has been exaggerated in the reports even though his performance is better than those reports.
He signed off by saying, “In his last 10 matches he is averaging about 44 and he has got three fifties, basically a fifty every three innings in his last 10 games. Even if he stops playing tomorrow, he will look back at his career with a lot of pride.”
Notably, Dhawan will be soon seen in action in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, starting on July 22 and he will be India’s captain in the absence of Rohit Sharma.
