Australia wicket-keeper batter Alex Carey talked about one of the insane stumpings by MS Dhoni during a T20I game. The fact that MS Dhoni conjured a stumping out of nowhere in 2016 further strengthened his status as one of cricket's most shrewd wicketkeepers.
The incident occurred on January 29, 2016, during India vs. Australia's second T20I in Melbourne. Australia lost by 27 runs when chasing 184, but one dismissal stood out.
James Faulkner tried a cut shot against Ravindra Jadeja while batting at number seven. The ball bounced off Dhoni's pad, grazed the bat, and landed on the stumps, dislodging the bails. Knowing the batter was out, Dhoni immediately burst into jubilation, leaving Faulkner stranded outside his crease.
But the batter was left perplexed and stunned, as though he was unable to process what had happened. Dhoni's failure to use his gloves to finish the stumping was verified by replays, which led to discussion on whether it was a deliberate move or a simple accident.
According to Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who discussed this in a Cricket Australia video of him responding to unusual keeping situations, Dhoni's skill made even the unlikely seem deliberate.
“Dhoni, he’s a genius, so he probably meant it. This probably is intentional because it’s MS Dhoni,” Carey said.
MS Dhoni effected 195 stumpings in international cricket, the most by a wicketkeeper. He also made the most stumpings in ODIs (123) and T20Is (34). And his 38 stumpings in tests are the joint third most in the format.
