Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has been ordered by the Calcutta High Court to give his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and their daughter INR 4 lakh per month in alimony.

According to the decision, Jahan would get INR 1.5 lakh, while their daughter will get INR 2.5 lakh. This is a significant step in their protracted legal battle, which has been going on since 2018.

After being married in 2014, Shami and Jahan have been embroiled in a bitter court dispute since Jahan accused the cricket player of adultery and domestic violence.

Although Jahan applauded the court's decision, she was dissatisfied with the alimony amount, claiming it was inadequate considering Shami's income and lifestyle. She has asked for an updated monthly payment of INR 10 lakhs.

“The way he leads his lifestyle, INR 4 lakh is less. We demanded INR 10 lakh four years ago. The cost of living has increased now. And we will demand it again. This judgment is a big win for me. I'm thankful to Imtiaz bhai (Jahan's advocate) and the Hon'ble Judge of the High Court. But I still think we should be getting a higher amount of money so I can take care of our daughter and meet her needs,” Jahan told PTI.

Jahan's lawyer, Imtiaz Ahmed, called the court order a significant milestone in the protracted battle, but he also argued that the monthly sum should be raised to INR 10 lakh.

“There is a high chance that when they return to the trial court to conclude the hearing on maintenance, it might be upgraded to INR 6 lakh because the claim of Hasin Jahan in her maintenance application was for INR 7 lakh and INR 3 lakh,” Ahmed said, as quoted by NDTV.

While Shami has largely remained silent in public about the matter, the court’s directive now legally binds him to the monthly payment until further decision from the trial court.
