In a dramatic turn of events, three Super Overs took place for the very first time to decide the winner of a T20I match between Netherlands and Nepal in Glasgow on Monday (June 16).
The match had ended in a tie after 20 overs, which led to a Super Over -- a rare occurrence itself in cricket. Then, even the Super Over was tied, requiring an even rarer occurrence of a second Super Over.
What followed was quite bizarre as the match, for the first time, went on to a third Super Over, where the game was eventually decided.
Batting first, Netherlands had posted a total of 152/7, in a match which is part of a tri-series also involving Scotland. Victory seemed a certainty for them but two boundaries in the final over by tailender Nandan Yadav took the match into a Super Over.
First Super Over:
Nepal batted first in the first Super Over, and scored 19 runs. Opener Kushan Bhurtel slammed two sixes and a boundary off Daniel Doram’s bowling.
Netherlands opener Max O'Dowd, however, replicated Bhurtel's heroics, hitting two sixes and a four himself to tie the game, leading to a second Super Over.
Second Super Over:
On this occasion, Netherlands batted first and scored 18 runs. Max O'Dowd hammered another six, as did Netherlands skipper Scott Edwards.
However, Nepal managed to level scores again, with captain Rohit Paudel hitting a six and Dipendra Singh Airee launching a six and a four to take the game to an unprecedented third Super Over.
Third Super Over:
The historic third Super Over proved to be disastrous for Nepal, who lost both wickets without scoring a single run. Off-spinner Zach Lion-Cachet stole the show for Netherlands, claiming both wickets.
Netherlands batter Michael Levitt smoked the first ball for six to seal the deal in what was a memorable encounter.
