On the third day of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC 2025) Final versus South Africa, Steve Smith injured his finger while trying to make a catch, giving Australia a serious fright.
When South Africa captain Temba Bavuma edged one off pacer Mitchell Starc into the cordon, Smith was standing close to the wicket wearing a helmet. The Australian veteran then missed the opportunity, as Bavuma was only two at the time.
The 36-year-old was in immediate pain after falling to the ground and phoning for help. He then hurried back to the pavilion while clutching the damaged digit, and Cricket Australia subsequently disclosed the severity of the injury.
“Steve Smith has suffered a compound dislocation of his right little finger while fielding in the slip cordon during the ICC Men's World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's. He was assessed by Australian team medical staff at the ground and taken to hospital for x-rays and further treatment,” the CA statement read as per the Independent UK.

Smith might be a serious doubt for Australia's upcoming match in the West Indies and is unlikely to play any more in the final. On June 25, Barbados will host the first of three Caribbean Test matches.
