On Saturday, New Zealand hitter Rachin Ravindra sustained a bizarre injury during the first ODI of the tri-series against Pakistan, sustaining a laceration to his forehead that left him bleeding.
He was promptly taken off the field. Despite New Zealand Cricket's assurance that he was "otherwise well," social media users told the International Cricket Council (ICC) that Pakistan should reconsider hosting the Champions Trophy.
The event occurred in Pakistan's 37th over, when Ravindra was seen steadying himself to take the catch after Khushdil Shah slog-swept Michael Bracewell to a deep square leg. However, as the ball struck him in the face, the New Zealand star lost sight of it in the floodlights.
Ravindra was observed looking at the ground for a few seconds, possibly in a stupor, before blood began to flow down his face, leaving the stadium astonished. The medical staff, including the Pakistan team doctor, raced in.
He was treated on the ground and lay down for a few minutes before being assisted out of the field, his face wrapped in a towel. The packed Gaddafi Stadium gave Ravindra hearty applause.
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif, speaking on Caught Behind, revealed that the main issue was the use of LED lights at the venue.
"The glow is more in such lights. Hence, when the ball travels flat, you are often unable to see it," he said.
According to New Zealand Cricket, Ravindra is "well," but will be closely monitored ahead of the team's second game against South Africa on Monday.
"Ravindra was forced from the field after being struck in the forehead by the ball attempting a catch in the 38th over. He sustained a laceration to the forehead which has been addressed and treated at the ground, but is otherwise well. He came through his first HIA (Head Injury Assessment) well and will continue to be monitored under HIA processes,” NZC statement read.
Following the event, which sparked worries among social media users, Pakistan's credentials as a Champions Trophy host nation were called into doubt, and the PCB was blamed for the injury.
