Ratan Tata, doyen of Tata Group passes away at 86; Indian cricket fraternity pays condolences

Ratan Tata's body kept for public to pay respects | XRatan Tata, chairperson of Tata Group, passed away at the age of 86 on Wednesday. He was undergoing treatment in critical condition and was in intensive care in a Mumbai hospital for the past few days.

Tata had stated on Monday that he was undergoing a routine medical investigation due to his age and related medical conditions.

In a late-night announcement on Wednesday, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, revealed Mr. Tata's death and praised the industrialist's steadfast devotion to excellence, integrity, and innovation. 

"It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation," said Mr Chandrasekaran. 

It should be mentioned that Ratan Tata was a renowned figure in Indian industry, having taken over as chairman of Tata Sons in 1991. During his tenure at Tata Sons, he helped turn the Tata Group from a mostly domestic corporation to a global one by acquiring companies such as Tetley, Corus, and Jaguar Land Rover.  

Under his leadership, Tata expanded into a global commercial empire worth more than $100 billion. Tata resigned in December 2012, and he was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced that Ratan Tata will be cremated with full state honors. The national flag will be flown at half-mast across government offices in Maharashtra as a mark of respect. The cremation will take place in the Worli area later in the day.
