Babar Azam resigns as Pakistan white-ball captain for second time; gets brutally mocked by fans

Babar Azam announced his decision to step down as Pakistan's skipper on Tuesday.

Babar Azam | GettyBabar Azam, just before midnight on October 1, 2024, put out a post on X and announced that he was stepping down as Pakistan white-ball captain with immediate effect. This was the second time in 12 months that Babar had resigned as Pakistan captain.

Babar had previously stepped down as Pakistan captain in all formats after the 2023 World Cup debacle. However, after Pakistan was hammered 1-4 by New Zealand under Shaheen Afridi’s leadership in preparation for the T20 World Cup 2024, PCB handed the white-ball captaincy back to Babar.

In Babar’s second tenure as captain, Pakistan won a bilateral series against Ireland 2-1 but struggled against more formidable opponents. They drew a T20 series 2-2 with New Zealand and lost 2-0 to England before the T20 World Cup.

The Men in Green then failed to qualify for the Super 8s in the T20 World Cup, losing embarrassingly to the USA and India in the group A stage.

Announcing his decision on Tuesday, Babar revealed that his choice ice to resign was driven by a desire to prioritize his performance as a player and find balance in his personal life.

“Dear Fans, I'm sharing some news with you today. I have decided to resign as captain of the Pakistan men's cricket team, effective as of my notification to the PCB and Team Management last month.

It's been an honor to lead this team, but it's time for me to step down and focus on my playing role. Captaincy has been a rewarding experience, but it's added a significant workload. I want to prioritize my performance, enjoy my batting, and spend quality time with my family, which brings me joy.

By stepping down, I will gain clarity moving forward and focus more energy on my game and personal growth. I'm grateful for your unwavering support and belief in me. Your enthusiasm has meant the world to me.

I'm proud of what we've achieved together and excited to continue contributing to the team as a player. Thank you for your love and support,” he posted on X.

Not only did Pakistan not do well in bilateral series and tournaments under Babar Azam’s captaincy, Babar struggled for form with the bat as well.

Now as he announced his resignation from Pakistan white-ball captaincy for the second time, fans on social media platform X decided to brutally troll him for his decision. Many questioned why he took up the offer of captaincy for the second time to begin in the first place.
