However, something unusual was seen during the closing stages of day 3, as bad light had the umpires asking the England captain Ollie Pope to refrain from using fast bowlers. This led to Chris Woakes, who had bowled the first two balls of his over as a pacer, reverting to off-spin for the rest of the four balls.

The incident happened in the seventh over of Sri Lanka's first innings, when the on-field umpires advised stand-in captain Ollie Pope that there was insufficient light for the pacers to continue.

Woakes, who had just dismissed Pathum Nissanka with the second delivery of his fourth over, had four deliveries left when the umpires intervened. This odd position required Woakes to finish his last four balls with off-spin, as England bowling coach Jeetan Patel and the players on the field watched the action unfold with interest.

Although Woakes' off-spin failed to take a wicket, the teammates had funny reactions. Joe Root, the current number one Test batter, lifted his eyebrows in astonishment and smiled broadly.
