After a long gap of four years, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hosted its first Annual Awards function in Hyderabad on Tuesday (January 23).
Mohammed Shami (2019-20), R Ashwin (2020-21), Jasprit Bumrah (2021-22) and Shubman Gill (2022-23) won the 'Polly Umrigar Award' for the best male cricketer of the year while Deepti Sharma (2019-20, 2022-23) and Smriti Mandhana (2020-21, 2021-22) bagged the best women’s cricketer of the year awards.
However, it was Indian women’s team batter Jemimah Rodrigues and legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar who stole the show at the award ceremony.
The duo performed on popular Bollywood song “Kya hua tera waada”. While Jemimah played the guitar, Gavaskar took the mic to sing.
On Thursday (January 24), Jemimah Rodrigues shared a video of her performance with Sunil Gavaskar on social media platform X.
“If someone had told me that one day I’d be singing with Sunil Gavaskar sir on stage I’d say no way! But IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED PS: It was Sunil sir’s idea to sing together on stage. What a legend,” Jemimah captioned the video.
During the special night in Hyderabad, Jemimah also received an award for scoring the most ODI runs in 2022-23.
Talking about Gavaskar, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest batters to have played for India. He was the first player in history to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket and was inducted into ICC’s Hall of Fame in 2009.
