WATCH - When Graeme Smith saved Sourav Ganguly from becoming the first batter to be timed out

Ganguly incident happened during 2007 Cape Town Test.

Smith decided not to appeal when Ganguly was 6 mins late to bat in 2007 Test | GettyThe ICC World Cup 2023 saw a historic moment when Angelo Mathews was dismissed timed out in the recent Sri Lanka v Bangladesh match which was played in Delhi on November 6. This became the first instance of a batter getting out in this manner in international cricket.

Mathews had reached the crease in the 25th over of the Lankan innings in time, but the strap of his helmet broke and before facing a ball, he chose to ask for a replacement. But Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, unhappy with the time taken, appealed and the on-field umpires gave Mathews out.

A livid Mathews returned to the dugout and threw his helmet across. In the aftermath, the Sri Lankan cricketer has shared several videos trying to prove his point that shouldn’t have been given out.

This instance reminded people of a Test match between South Africa and India 16 years ago, when Sourav Ganguly almost became the first batter to be dismissed timed out in international cricket, after being six minutes late in getting onto the ground to face the ball.

The incident happened in Cape Town in a 2007 Test between the two sides, as after opener Wasim Jaffer got out, Sachin Tendulkar was slated to bat at no.4.

CWC 2023: “Unfortunate but within the rules,” Shakib has no regret at all over Mathews' 'timed out' dismissal

But since Sachin had been out of the field during South African innings for a certain amount of time, the fourth umpire stopped him from batting for that same period of time. Jaffer was dismissed at 10.43 am and Tendulkar could not bat before 10.48 am.

The next man in was VVS Laxman and he was in the shower as his ritual and was not ready to bat. This forced Sourav Ganguly, who was slated to bat at no.6 and sitting in his shorts, to get ready in a hurry.

It took Ganguly six minutes to reach the crease to take strike, but Proteas captain Graeme Smith chose not to appeal for the timed-out dismissal after the entire issue was explained to him by the officials.
