Veteran India spinner R Ashwin is a staunch supporter of running out the non-striker if the batter leaves the crease before the ball is bowled and he himself gained infamy after he ran out Jos Buttler in an IPL match in the same fashion.
This mode of dismissal was formerly called Mankading, named after Vinoo Mankad, the great India all-rounder who performed first such instance, when he ran out Australia's Bill Brown in a match in 1948.
Debates happened when India’s Deepti Sharma ran out Charlie Dean in a Women’s ODI at Lord’s last year, as she was slammed for going against the spirit of the game. But there were many who came in support of Deepti, with Ashwin being one of them.
On Monday, Ashwin posted a video on social media in which a bowler run outs the batter at non-striker's end -- a dismissal that is still a matter of debate despite it not coming under cricket's 'unfair play' anymore.
"Winning dismissal. More awareness and mindfulness required towards the closing stages of a game,” wrote Ashwin on X, formerly known as Twitter.
However, the video and Ashwin’s reaction to the same sparked serious debate on social media whether the dismissal should happen or not.
