Joe Root plucked one out of thin air | TwitterJoe Root took a screamer of a catch in the first slip on day two of the ongoing fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test between England and Australia at the Oval on July 28, 2023.

England had made 283 runs in their first innings after they were put into bat by Pat Cummins who had won the toss. Harry Brook made 85, while Ben Duckett made 41 and Chris Woakes made 36 runs. For Australia, Mitchell Starc picked 4/82 and Josh Hazlewood and Todd Murphy took two wickets.

On day two, Australia had resumed on 61/1 with David Warner being the batter dismissed on day one itself.

Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja were the overnight batters and both looked in good touch as England looked for early wickets and they got one in style.

Mark Wood bowled a beauty of a delivery to Marnus, who couldn’t help by edge it and the ball went in between the keeper Jonny Bairstow and first slip Joe Root. With Bairstow barely moving, Root went for the catch one-handed and plucked the ball after it had passed him.

This was a brilliant catch by the veteran Englishman who sent back Labuschagne to the pavilion for 9 runs which came off 82 balls and reduced Australia to 91/2.
