Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif share throwback posts on anniversary of 2002 NatWest tri-series triumph

India defeated England in final of 2002 NatWest triseries at the Lord's ground.

Yuvraj and Kaif added 121 runs for 6th wicket to ensure India came back into the game and won it | GettyOn July 13, 2002, India recorded one of its most famous wins when they defeated England in the final of the NatWest Triseries by achieving the then-highest total chased in ODIs.

Nasser Hussain’s maiden ODI hundred and a ton by Marcus Trescothick propelled England to 325/5 at the Lord’s, while Zaheer Khan had picked three wickets.

In response, chasing 326 runs, India received a rollicking start as Virender Sehwag (45) and Sourav Ganguly (60) added 106 runs in just 14.3 overs. However, once the openers fell, the England bowlers applied pressure and took cheap wickets of Dinesh Mongia (9), Rahul Dravid (5), and the big fish Sachin Tendulkar for 14 runs, leaving India reeling at 146/5 in 24 overs.

But little did the England team know that two young 20-odd years old had some other ideas. Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif added 121 runs for the 6th wicket and put the pressure back on England. Yuvraj stroked 69 in 63 balls but got out on the score of 267 runs.

Then Mohammad Kaif kept India in the chase and with Harbhajan contributing valuable 15 runs, took the team home with 3 balls to spare with 2 wickets in hand. Kaif remained unbeaten on 87 in 75 balls as India lifted the tri-series trophy.

Yuvraj Singh - shared a throwback on Instagram on Thursday, 13 July. Yuvraj captioned the images from the final by saying that the team ensured that the tricolor flew high at the home of cricket.

"Throwback to this beautiful and memorable day at the Lord's when we ensured our tricolor flies high with pride. This encounter should have been called NaTEST instead of Natwest coz it “tested” us at so many levels! Our victory won’t have been possible without the efforts of my teammates, especially our bhai sahab Mohammad Kaif," Yuvraj wrote on social media.

On the other hand, Mohammad Kaif also posted a video of himself watching the highlights of the match with his family.

He captioned: “Went home to Allahabad and caught Natwest rerun with parents. Maa’s words: “Final live to nahi dekh paye, but Allah ka karam ki hazaar baar ye match dekha TV pe”. Papa is so happy to see Dada at Lord’s balcony.”
