Ashes 2023: “Shoes off if you hate Alex Carey”- Australian keeper gets hostile reception from Western terrace at Headingley

Carey had stumped Bairstow at Lord's when the batter went gardening thinking the ball was dead.

Alex Carey and Headingly crowd | TwitterAustralian wicket-keeper Alex Carey received a hostile reception from the fans on the Western terrace at the Headingley in Leeds when he came out to bat on day one of the third Ashes 2023 Test in Leeds.

Carey walked to the crease being jeered and booed, while several English players also exchanged a word with the Aussie on his way to the middle. The fans at the western terrace were even pictured with dozens of shoes in the air, shouting “Shoes off if you hate Carey.”

This was due to Carey stumping Jonny Bairstow on day five of the second Test at Lord’s when he thought the ball was dead – and the tourists have since been slammed for disrespecting the ‘spirit of the game.’

Cheat, cheat, cheat, cheat,” they yelled at Carey after every ball. The keeper-batter faced a barrage of short balls and was dropped twice by Joe Root on 4 and 5.

He was finally dismissed by Mark Wood after being stunned with a bouncer to his head.

Meanwhile, Australia posted 263 runs in their first innings with Mitchell Marsh making 118. For England, Mark Wood picked a fifer, while Chris Woakes took 3 wickets.

In response, Pat Cummins accounted for Ben Duckett and Harry Brook early, while Marsh dismissed Crawley after he had made 33 runs as England ended day one on 68/3 with Bairstow and Root at the crease.
