The ongoing first day of the third Ashes 2023 Test saw the brilliance of Mitchell Marsh saving face for Australia as England’s Mark Wood ran through the visiting side with raw pace on July 6.

Coming into the third Test with a lead of 2-0, Pat Cummins and co was asked to bat first by England captain Ben Stokes, who won the toss.

England had announced their playing XI a day before and saw the inclusion of Mark Wood, Chris Woakes, and Moeen Ali in place of Ollie Pope, James Anderson, and Josh Tongue.

For Australia, Mitchell Marsh replaced Cameron Green, Scott Boland came in for Josh Hazlewood and Todd Murphy made his Ashes debut in place of injured Nathan Lyon, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the series.

Australia got off to a poor start as David Warner fell to his nemesis Stuart Broad in the first over itself, and then Usman Khawaja was bowled by Mark Wood for 13 runs.

Steve Smith (22) playing his 100th Test and Marnus Labuschagne (21) rebuilt the innings a little, but Chris Woakes and Broad accounted for them.

Mitchell Marsh, making his return to the Australian Test team, counterattacked beautifully as Wood ran through the lower-order batters. He, along with Travis Head (39), added 155 runs for the 5th wicket to take Australia to a decent total.

Marsh hit a run-a-ball 118 with 17 fours and 4 sixes to his name, as Australia crumbled to 263 all out. Mark Wood picked 5/34, while Chris Woakes took three wickets as well.

The cricket fraternity was all praises for the Australian all-rounder who hit his 3rd Test century to save his team from embarrassment.
