The controversy surrounding Jonny Bairstow's stumping dismissal by Alex Carey in the second Ashes 2023 Test between England and Australia at Lord’s is not willing to die yet as several videos have surfaced of Bairstow and England players themselves being involved in debatable dismissals.
England accused Australian players of being against the ‘spirit of the game’ after Bairstow had left the crease immediately ducking under a Cameron Green bouncer. This is when Carey threw the ball at the stumps and appealed for the wicket of Bairstow. The decision was sent upstairs and the third umpire ruled it out.
Australian players were booed in the field by the crowd and even in the long room of the Lord’s.
But now amidst other videos of England players celebrating dismissals of debatable nature where the spirit of cricket could’ve been questioned, a video has gone viral of Jonny Bairstow stumping out an opposition batter in a cheeky fashion during a county game in 2014.
The clip that was of a county match showed Nottinghamshire batter Samit Patel leaving a delivery during a match against Yorkshire. Bairstow, who was wicketkeeping, waited and removed the bails only when Patel's foot raised in the air, stumping the Nottinghamshire batter.
After the day’s play, the presenter can be seen asking Bairstow: "What a fantastic stumping, an opportunistic piece of work?"
To this, Bairstow replies: "It is just one of those things that are within the rules of the game and that is how it is.”
