Bowlers running out batters at the non-striker’s end for backing up too far used to be a rare occurrence but it has become quite common in recent times.
Several instances of such dismissals have been witnessed in the last few months. New Norfolk bowler Harry Booth is the latest to pull off this run out and Claremont’s Jarrod Kaye was the victim of it.
After being given run out at the non-striker’s end, Kaye was furious as he tossed his bat in the air before doing the same with his gloves and helmet.
While walking back to the pavilion, the batter also hurled some angry words at the umpire and the bowling team.

After the ICC amended its rule book in October 2022, such run-outs at the bowler’s end are no longer considered ‘unfair play’. However, the debate continues on whether this mode of dismissal is against the spirit of cricket or not.
In the past, Indian cricketers like R Ashwin and Deepti Sharma have faced backlash by pulling off run out at the non-striker’s end.
Earlier this year, India skipper Rohit Sharma withdrew an appeal after Mohammad Shami ran Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka out at the non-striker’s end for backing up too far.
