Australia tried valiantly to get the nine wickets to seal an innings win in the third and final Test against South Africa in Sydney, which was badly marred by rain, but along with the weather, a few calls went against them including two catches.

One of the catches was of Heinrich Klaasen who in the ninth over of South Africa’s second innings was made to edge a ball off Nathan Lyon to the slips, where Steve Smith grabbed a brilliant catch with both hands despite it being near the ground.

The decision sent upstairs for a review suggested that Smith may have not completed the take cleanly. The TV umpire, after multiple replays, deemed that the catch was invalid and gave Klaasen not out, which left the Australian side surprised.

Earlier on day four, Smith had been involved in a similar incident when Proteas skipper Dean Elgar was given life after Smith had taken a diving one-handed low to his right off Josh Hazlewood.

Elgar was also deemed not out after multiple replays showed that the ball had possibly touched the ground.

Speaking about the same, Steve Smith said after the match: We tried a lot out there, I think there were 4 umpire's calls that didn't quite go our way and a couple of half-chances this morning, if we take those things might have been different maybe potentially, but we worked hard all day. I can understand the one (catch) the other day the one that I scooped up with the one hand I think that might have potentially touched the ground, but today's one I was pretty certain that I caught today's one. Deemed the other way, so that happens as well, can't do much about it. It's the umpire's call.”
