'History will be kinder to him'- Fans recall Virat Kohli’s four-year-old words about workload management, fitness

Ahead of IPL 2019, Kohli had said that players need to be smart about their workload.

Virat Kohli and Indian team | TwitterAfter the review meeting held on Sunday, January 1, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recommended that the yo-yo test and DEXA scans will be criteria for selection in the Indian team and that the NCA will work with the IPL franchises to monitor workloads of players shortlisted for 2023 World Cup in India.

Workload management has been an area of concern for the Indian for the last couple of years and due to cramped scheduling, the management has no other option but to rest a few of their key players in a series here or there.

This has led to players not playing enough international cricket with one another and it hampered India in knockouts of multi-nation tournaments. "Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023," the BCCI added in a statement.

The moment the board released the key takeaways from the review meeting, the fans remembered former captain Virat Kohli's words before the World Cup in 2019.

Kohli, ahead of the IPL 2019, had said that the communication was done with the players on how to be smart in managing their workload, inform the franchise and stay in the touch with the physio.

Kohli then clarified his statement saying that he didn't mean that players shouldn't play the IPL or it shouldn't be the focus but asked them to be smart.

All the workload will be monitored during the World Cup - and given a window, the guys can afford to rest. I can guarantee that because a World Cup comes every four years and we play IPL every year. Not to say we won’t be committed to the IPL but we’ve got to be smart. We have to work in balance and take smart decisions. The responsibility and the onus is on the player. No one will be forced to do something. Eventually, everyone will know no one wants to miss the World Cup and cost the team good balance," Kohli had said before the IPL 2019.
