Australia opener David Warner ended his rut of low scores in his milestone 100th Test for his country as he hit a scintillating unbeaten double hundred in the ongoing second Test against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
Warner, who was under pressure after a string of poor scores for Australia, came through big time as he struck his third Test double-hundred which came in 254 balls with 16 fours and 2 sixes to his name.
His effort and 85 from Steve Smith and 48* from Travis Head have put Australia in a commanding position in the first innings as they ended day 2 on 386/3 with a lead of 197 runs after they had bowled out South Africa for 189 on day one itself.
During his record knock, which ended after he had to retire hurt immediately after celebrating his 200, David Warner became the 10th man in Test history to score a century in his 100th Test, and the second to score a double, after England’s Joe Root, who scored a double ton against India in Chennai last year in his 100th Test.
This century broke a nearly three-year drought for Warner in Tests and it was his 25th Test ton. He had last hit a Test ton in January 2020. He also posted his first 50-plus score in Test cricket in 11 innings since his previous half-century in Lahore earlier this year.
Warner also became only the second player to score a century in both his 100th ODI as well as 100th Test, after Gordon Greenidge, and became the eighth Australian to pass 8000 Test runs during the course of his innings.
Warner was given a standing ovation by the MCG crowd and his own teammates, and even the cricket fraternity lauded him on Twitter.
