AUS v SA 2022-23: WATCH- Labuschagne sets MCG on fire with his fielding; runs out Elgar, takes a leaping catch of Zondo

South Africa managed just 189 runs in 1st innings after being asked to bat first.

Marnus Labuschagne | GettyAustralia’s Marnus Labuschagne was on fire when it came to fielding on day one of the ongoing first Test match against South Africa. After steamrolling the Proteas on a green top Brisbane pitch, Australia captain Pat Cummins started well by winning the toss and choosing to bowl first.

South African batters seemingly had PTSD from their first innings showing in Brisbane and Australian bowlers dominated the proceedings. They were supported well by their fielders as well with Marnus Labuschagne contributing with an excellent direct hit run out and then a brilliant diving catch.

Proteas captain Dean Elgar was the first victim of Labuschagne who chanced the Australian fielder’s arm. Elgar dabbed the fuller delivery towards the off-side and set off for a quick run.

However, the Proteas captain’s judgment proved to be wrong as Labuschagne swooped onto the ball quickly, picked it up, took aim towards the stumps, and hurled the ball.

The ball hit the stumps from side on with Elgar well outside the crease and he had to walk back to the pavilion for 26 runs. This was also Dean Elgar's first-ever run out of his Test career after scoring 5000 plus runs.

Australia continued putting pressure on Proteas' batting and, in an effort, to break free, Khaya Zondo tried to hit one ball from Mitchell Starc towards the mid-off region, but hit the ball in the air and Labuschagne was airborne when he took an excellent diving catch.
