Mirabai Chanu | GettyLiving up to the expectations, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu on Saturday (July 30) won the first gold medal for India at Commonwealth Games 2022.

Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg in the women’s 49kg category competition. She was way ahead of her competitors as she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.

In the first snatch attempt, Chanu successfully lifted 84kg, securing an 8kg-lead over the second best. In her next attempt, she added 4 more kgs and lifted 88kg with ease, setting a CWG record.

In her first attempt of clean and jerk itself, Chanu lifted 109kg to claim India's first gold of CWG 2022. But she wasn't pleased there as she added 4 kgs more in her second attempt to lift a whopping 113 kgs.

Her efforts secured India's third medal of the day – all three in weightlifting after Sanket Sargar had won silver and Gururaja Poojary had clinched bronze in their respective events.

The Indian cricket fraternity congratulated Mirabai Chanu on bagging the gold medal for India at CWG 2022.
