Madhya Pradesh created history as they defeated Mumbai in the final of the Ranji Trophy 2022 in Bengaluru by 6 wickets on the final day of the match on June 26, 2022. They became champions 69 years after they last won the coveted trophy in their former avatar, as Holkar.
The last time Madhya Pradesh reached the final of the tournament was in 1998-99 when they lost to Karnataka at this same venue.
Mumbai made 374 after winning the toss and batting first, thanks to 134 from Sarfaraz Khan and 78 from Yashasvi Jaiswal. For MP, Gaurav Yadav picked 4/106, and Anubhav Agarwal took 3/81.
In reply, Madhya Pradesh batted brilliantly, to make 536 runs with Yash Dubey (133), Shubham Sharma (116), and Rajat Patidar (122) leading the way with the bat. For Mumbai Shams Mulani picked 5/173.
Trailing by 162 runs, Mumbai had to bat out of their skins to save the game or put up an imposing total. But Kumar Karthikeya’s 4/98 and two wickets each from Gaurav Yadav and Parth Sahani, Mumbai only managed 269 runs and set a 108-run target for MP to chase.
MP chased the total down with only 4 wickets falling, as Himanshu Mantri (37), Shubman Sharma, and Rajat Patidar made 30-runs each helping MP attain the target in 29.5 overs and winning the final by 6 wickets.
They created history with their win and gave their coach Chandrakant Pandit a huge gift as he was the captain of the MP team which lost the final in 1998-99 to Karnataka at the same Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru.
The Indian cricket fraternity was elated with Madhya Pradesh becoming Ranji Champions and lauded the team on Twitter.
