Spain’s tennis legend Rafael Nadal created history as he beat Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the final to win the Australia Open 2022 grand slam tournament. In the process, Nadal took his grand slam victory tally to 21, one more than both Switzerland’s Roger Federer and Serbia’s Novak Djokovic.
Medvedev started the match on a commanding note, winning the first set 6-2. The Russian went on to win the second set 7(7)-6(5), which went into a tie-breaker. Nadal then produced a brilliant comeback and went on to notch the following two sets 6-4 each.
The final set of the match produced an amazing comeback from left-handed Nadal who managed to triumph the young Medvedev 7-5 to clinch the match and the title. This was Nadal’s second Australian Open victory after 2009.
Rafael Nadal, 35, who turned professional at the age of 15, has won the French Open in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020. He triumphed in Wimbledon in 2008 and 2010 and won the US Open in 2010, 2013, 2017, 2019.
