Australia opener David Warner fell five runs short of what would have been an excellent century in the ongoing second Test of the Ashes 2021-22 being played in Adelaide with a pink ball under lights.

Stand-in Australia captain Steve Smith, leading the Kangaroos for the first time since the 2018 Cape Town Test match, won the toss and chose to bat first. Stuart Broad removed Marcus Harris to two runs, thanks to a brilliant catch from keeper Jos Buttler.

David Warner then added 172 runs with Marnus Labuschagne before getting out for 95 runs with 11 fours to his name. His wicket was taken by Ben Stokes who had him caught by Stuart Broad at covers off a long hop. Warner looked dejected at missing another century, as he was out for 94 in the first Test at Gabba, Brisbane.

While making his way towards the dressing room, the swashbuckling batter passed on his gloves to a young kid in the stands, who was left visibly happy by the exchange and made his day.

Australia ended day one on 221/2 with Marnus Labuschagne unbeaten on 95 and Steve Smith on 18*.
