United States of America (USA) defeated Canada in the Super Over of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 Americas Qualifiers. The match saw a dramatic and controversial finish which opened doors for debates in the cricket fraternity.

What could have been an easy win for Canada, ended up against them as they allowed the USA to run two runs in byes with a total of three runs required off the last delivery. 

USA were chasing 143 runs in 20 overs and they needed 13 runs off the final over to seal the match. The equation was reduced to 3 runs off 2 deliveries when Jatinderpal Matharu dismissed Karima Gore on an LBW appeal.

With 3 needed off the last ball, Matharu did well to not allow Ali Khan to make a connection. But Khan and Rusty Theron managed to steal two runs anyway through byes after Canada wicketkeeper Hamza Tariq took off the bails at the striker’s end and threw the ball.

As per the law, “The ball shall be considered to be dead when it is clear to the bowler’s end umpire that the fielding side and both batters at the wicket have ceased to regard it as in play."

Assuming they have won the match, the Canadians started celebrating only to find out the match will go to a Super Over. Matharu conceded 22 runs in the Super Over and Canada could only score 14 runs in reply.
