Cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir congratulated the Indian men's team for registering a historic win against Germany by 5-4 to win a bronze medal at Olympics 2020. India men's hockey team, who won their last Olympic medal at the 1980 Moscow Games, ended a 41-year wait on Thursday (August 5).

Gambhir, however, ended up offending cricket fans on social media with his congratulatory tweet for the hockey team. He said the Olympic medal win for Indian hockey is bigger than the Indian cricket team's World Cup victories in 1983, 2007, and 2011.

"Forget 1983, 2007, or 2011, this medal in Hockey is bigger than any World Cup! #IndianHockeyMyPride," Gambhir tweeted after the win over Germany.

Twitterati gave a mixed reaction to Gambhir's tweet. Most of the fans felt it was unnecessary by the former India batsman to drag cricket into his tweet while celebrating the win of the India men's hockey team.

Gambhir later responded to a tweet and wrote that he wants every sportsperson to get the limelight for their success.

"I speak for everyone who feels that each & every sport & sportsperson who shines against odds should be celebrated by media & pop culture alike! No thanks needed Rajesh!", he tweeted.
