India scored the victory goal after Gurjit Kaur successfully converted a penalty corner in the 22nd minute of the game. Australia were the favorite to win the match but India stunned them with their best gameplay of the ongoing Olympics.
The cricket fraternity was in awe of the historic win by the Indian women's hockey team. The victory came a day after the men's hockey team qualified for the semi-final.
There were doubts over their qualification to the knockout stage, but the India women's hockey team qualified for the Olympic quarter-finals after 41 years.
They had defeated South Africa by 4-3 in their last group stage match and later defending champions Great Britain crushed Ireland by 2-0 to ensure a place for India in the quarter-final.
