July 26 was the day of the Indian armed forces’ successful operation in the Kargil sector of Kashmir against the Pakistani army and militants in 1999 and is known as ‘Operation Vijay’. Therefore every year since then, July 26 is celebrated as 'Kargil Vijay Diwas'.
The anniversary is observed each year across the nation to show respect and gratitude to the brave servicemen of the armed forces who laid down their lives to re-capture all positions that had been seized by the Pakistan Army.
In the winter of 1998-1999, Pakistan armed forces infiltrated the Indian Territory via LOC in an operation named ‘Operation Badr’. The aim of the Pakistani incursion was to sever the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and cause Indian forces to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier.
The Government of India responded with Operation Vijay, a mobilization of 200,000 Indian troops. Finally, war came to an official end on July 26, 1999, thus making it as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
The Indian cricket fraternity took to Twitter to pay tributes to the 527 martyrs and many others who gave lives to keep this nation safe from the enemy and also to celebrate the Kargil Vijay Diwas 2021.
