MS Dhoni is celebrating his 40th birthday on Wednesday (July 7), and the former India captain received wishes from several former and current Indian cricketers. Dhoni has been trending constantly on Twitter due to his ardent fans not just today, but over the past week which says a lot about his popularity.

Now retired from international cricket after a glorious 15-year career for India, Dhoni only plays for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. He continues to lead the franchise and though his batting form has not been the same due to not playing a lot of cricket, his wicket-keeping skills and captaincy remains top-notch.

Dhoni has gained a lot of respect not just in India, but also overseas, while playing international cricket and in the IPL. Steve Smith, prolific Australian batsman, who often played against India with Dhoni part of the team, also shared the dressing room with the wicketkeeper-batsman for Rising Pune Supergiant. Smith wished Dhoni on his birthday and recalled their two seasons together for the franchise.

"Terrific guy. Had the pleasure of playing alongside him at Pune. Great to play alongside. And I saw in my feed today that it is his birthday. So Happy Birthday Mahi! Hope you have a great day buddy," Steve Smith said during his Q&A session on Instagram when asked by a fan to say something about Dhoni.

Smith played the first season for Pune Supergiant under Dhoni's captaincy in 2016, while the latter played under the Australian's captaincy in the second season. Supergiant narrowly lost the 2017 IPL final by one run to Mumbai Indians.

Another Australian batsman, David Warner, also wished Dhoni on Instagram. He wrote, "A shout out to the birthday man @mahi7781 Happy B’day great man, have a great day. #cricket #goat #legend"
