The 30-year-old England opener was signed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) just before the start of the IPL 2021 as a replacement for Mitchell Marsh after the Australian all-rounder opted out of the cash-rich T20 league at the last minute citing personal reasons.

Roy had a base price of INR 2 Crore, and the SRH, the 2016 IPL winners, acquired the right-hander at his base price for the IPL 14. The IPL had revealed the signing of the opener in a media advisory earlier.
