As Virender Sehwag celebrated the 17th anniversary of his maiden triple-century in Test cricket on Monday (March 29), wishes poured in for the legendary Indian batsman on social media and it was his then captain Sourav Ganguly who made the latter’s day amazing with a heartfelt compliment.

On March 29 in 2004, Sehwag made history by becoming the first Indian batsman to smash a Test triple-century against Pakistan, in Multan.

The right-hander spent 531 minutes on the crease to score 309 runs off just 375 balls at a strike-rate of 82.40 laced with 39 fours and 6 sixes against a strong Pakistan bowling attack featuring the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, and Saqlain Mushtaq.

Following his record-breaking knock against the arch-rivals Pakistan in Multan, Sehwag earned the nickname, Sultan of Multan. His knock helped India beat Pakistan by an innings and 52 runs in the first Test of the three-match Test series that was later won by Team India 2-1 on the tour.

On Monday, Sehwag took to Instagram to share a clip from this memorable match to celebrate the 17th anniversary of his maiden triple-century in Test cricket in Pakistan.

He captioned the special post, “29th March- a special date for me. Had the privilege and honor of becoming the first Indian to score a triple hundred in Test cricket. Icing on the cake was to score it against Pakistan in Multan. Late #deanjones commentating. Coincidentally 4 years later, on the same date got out on 319 against South Africa in Chennai. #march #indvspak,”

Sehwag was quick to notice his former captain’s comment as he came up with a warm reply while expressed gratitude to the legendary cricketer.

He replied by saying: “I have had the pleasure and honor if playing under you Dada. Gratitude to you always for backing me. Sincerely pray for your good health always.”

Noteworthy, Sehwag had also hit another triple ton in Test cricket scoring 319 off 304 balls against South Africa in December 2016. Sehwag, Brian Lara, Chris Gayle, and Don Bradman are the only cricketers who have scored 2 triple-centuries in Test cricket.
