Bangladesh skipper Tamim Iqbal escaped a controversial caught and bowled decision while facing New Zealand paceman Kyle Jamieson during the second ODI in Christchurch on Tuesday (March 23).

During the 15th over of Bangladesh’s innings, Tamim offered a sharp return chance to the 6-foot-8 inches tall Jamieson, who went low on his follow-through to take an exceptional catch.

In the process, Jamieson held the ball in his right hand and the white cherry touched the surface.

While the on-field umpire went upstairs by giving the soft signal OUT, the television umpire, after examining several angles, ruled that Jamieson did not have full control of the ball and overturned the on-field call.

Replays indicated that while Jamieson did complete the catch, a part of the ball was grazing the pitch before he got up again to celebrate. Therefore, third umpire Chris Gaffaney felt that the Kiwi pacer was not in complete control.

Notably, Tamim was batting on 34 at the time. The southpaw eventually scored 78 off 108 balls as Bangladesh posted 271/6 in 50 overs.

Coming to the rule, section 33.3 of MCC’s Laws of Cricket states, “the act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder’s person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement.”
